Occurrence:
L-Carnitin is to be found in muscle tissue and is introduced to the body through daily nutrition mit meat-containing food. Vegetable nutrition sources do not deliver L-Carnitin. For this reason, especially vegetarians are under supplied with L-Carnitin.

Importance:
L-Carnitin is part of nutrition (exception: vegetarians, viz. above). Bio chemically, L-Carnitin has the physiological proprieties of a ''transportation substance'' in that it transports fat acids to the muscle cells where the latter are burned (oxydised) for the production of energy. Thus L-Carnitin plays an central role in the use and oxydisation of fat.

In all intensively practised aerobic athletics such as running, swimming or cycling the demand for L-Carnitin is particularly considerable. Under extreme duress, e.g. in marathon, triathlon or cycling races, the consumption of L-Carnitin is so intense that a refilling of the depot through ordinary nutrition is very slow. For an athlete whose objective it is to perform at his highest level as soon as possible this takes much too long. L-Carnitin deficiency and a decline in performance could be the consequences.

But also with less well trained athletes the provision of L-Carnitin ist often insufficient as the self synthesis of L-Carnitin frequently develops too slowly to keep up with the burdens imposed by athletics. Therefore a nutritional supplementation with L-Carnitin is highly recommended for all performance athlets to prevent a threatening deficiency.

In power training such as bodybuilding energy is delivered primarily through carbon hydrates. Consequently, this is an anaerobic training in which the provision of energy from fat plays a rather secondary role. After power training of one to two hours the glycogen reserves, depending on training intensity, are mostly used up.

If an aerobic training immediately follows the power training, e.g. on the bicycle ergometer or stepper, fat as well is burned in a considerable manner. For this reason, L-Carnitin is rather liked by power athletes.
